The Chewelah Center for the Arts is proud to host the annual Spokane Salish Cultural Event. This vibrant evening of storytelling, music, and education honors the enduring legacy of the Spokane Salish people.
This free community event begins at 5:00 PM and invites guests of all ages to experience the rich traditions and contemporary voices of the Salish community. Attendees will enjoy:
Educational Presentations on Spokane Salish history, land stewardship, and the 1870 Colville Indian Tribes Census
Live Performance featuring traditional storytelling
Short film “United By Water” by Derrick Lamere, narrated by Sherman Alexie
Beading Display by Leona Stanger
The event will begin at the historic Colville Indian Agency Cabin. Tours will begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by a presentation on the Indian Census at 5:00 p.m. Attendees will then view the Spokane Tribe dugout canoe display in the Center's parking lot before proceeding inside for more presentations, including noted local historian Joe Barreca. The event will end at 8 p.m. after a lively storytelling session from Devon Peone.
