Is This a Comedy or is This a Romance?

Broadway playwright Jason Carmichael has made a very successful career out of writing romantic comedies. He knows all the rules: boy meets girl, complications ensue, and eventually everyone lives happily ever after.

Then he meets Phoebe Craddock.

Phoebe is a bright, somewhat shy schoolteacher from Vermont with a talent for writing and a dream of seeing her work on Broadway. Jason takes her under his wing, and before long the two become an enormously successful writing team. Together, they turn out hit after hit while their own lives become increasingly tangled.

Through marriages, career triumphs, disappointments, and more than a few romantic complications, Jason and Phoebe remain devoted friends and creative partners. But while they can write a perfect love story for practically anyone else, they seem remarkably incapable of figuring out their own.

Romantic Comedy is Bernard Slade's warm, witty, and wonderfully theatrical look at two people who know everything about romance on paper and almost nothing about it in real life.

Bernard Slade

Bernard Slade (1930–2019) was a celebrated Canadian-American playwright and screenwriter renowned for masterfully blending sharp wit with deep human emotion. After starting his career as an actor, Slade moved to Hollywood, where he created hit television sitcoms like The Partridge Family and The Flying Nun. He later conquered Broadway with his Tony-nominated, Oscar-nominated masterpiece Same Time, Next Year.

In his 1979 Broadway hit Romantic Comedy, Slade affectionately pays homage to classic screwball films. The play tracks the witty, 13-year, on-again-off-again relationship between two mismatched writing collaborators as they navigate fame, family, and unrequited love.
